A crowd of thousands that spanned the entire length of Portland’s Burnside Bridge gathered at midnight on July 1st to celebrate the beginning of cannabis legalization in Oregon.

“It was amazing”, Jennifer Alexander, who’s on the Board of Directors for Portland NORML, tells us. “Thousands of people gathered together smoking marijuana to celebrate the moment Oregon legalized – what could be more Portland? Traffic was amazing too, they were all very supportive and patient despite the backup from the crowd blocking traffic. Buses honked in support and waved – I saw one even made an impromptu stop to let passengers off in the middle of the crowd to join us!”

Alexander notes that “police drove past with traffic and didn’t seem at all concerned with the crowd, and at one point, a fire truck came through waving and cheering while blaring the siren. At first, I thought there was a fire or other emergency, but they were clearly celebrating with us because they drove slowly past even though no traffic was blocking them, and they were waving at us. It was truly an amazing night and a moment of making history here in Oregon.”

In Oregon, it’s now entirely legal for anyone 21 and older to possess up to a half a pound of cannabis at a private residence, or up to an ounce in public. It’s also legal to cultivate up to four cannabis plants.
